Introduction

The Localisation of the Topic in the Curriculum of Baden Württemberg, Germany

Further information

This teaching material is provided for class 9 of a secondary school.

The subject of history is among the least popular subjects in school1 . The following teaching material is an attempt to make it easier for students to relate to that topic, which concerns the disabled veterans of the First World War. This should be done with creativity, to be more precise, with the description and interpretation of art which was made during the first world war. Afterwards the students should work with sources. These should show them the problems of the reintegration of the disabled into the workforce. Working with source material will lead the students back to the classical history lesson.

Reception

The students should be greeted, after which they should be given a small preview to prepare them for the lesson. The students have already discussed the First World War, so the topic "Disabled Veterans" is just a small excursion. This excursion starts with the description and interpretation of paintings in order to cautiously approach to the topic. The preview shall include group work with the following presentation and a discussion with the original sources.
