About the Project

Bleed White - Development of an Educational Platform

The centennial of the First World War inspired the department for the History of the Impact of Technology (Wirkungsgeschichte der Technik), a part of the Historic Institute of the University of Stuttgart, to initiate an international educational and editorial project concerned with the History of Science, Technology, Medicine and Corporate History, with the aim to create an international platform for teachers in English and German.

First, students worked on manageable topics in local seminars and designed digital presentations of their results. During this process the students had the opportunity to get acquainted to the didactical processing of historical material for the use in School. Secondly, these results of the local workgroups have been made accessible to the public by uniting them on an educational internet platform.

An analysis of the industrialized manslaughter and of the connected developments in Sciences, Medicine, and Technology are essential for the understanding of the multifaceted phenomenon of the Great War. With this approach we are clearly distinguished from a merely encyclopedic recapitulation of well-known facts or even the utilization of the primal catastrophe of the 20th Century as means for national formation of identity.
